Understanding Common Cancers

Evidence-based awareness and early detection markers for our community.

Breast Cancer

The most prevalent cancer in the UK. Early intervention via mammograms and self-exams is the primary defense.

  • New lumps or thickened tissue
  • Nipple discharge or inversion
  • Skin dimpling (orange peel texture)
  • Changes in breast shape/size

Pancreatic Cancer

Often asymptomatic in early stages. Persistent digestive changes require immediate clinical consultation.

  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes/skin)
  • Unexplained mid-back pain
  • Oily, pale, or floating stools
  • Rapid, unexplained weight loss

Prostate Cancer

The most common cancer in men. Many cases grow slowly, but detection through PSA testing is vital for effective treatment.

  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Blood in urine or semen

Lung Cancer

A critical focus for all demographics. New screening technology is vastly improving 5-year survival rates.

  • Cough persisting over 3 weeks
  • Hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
  • Chest pain during deep breathing
  • Chronic, unexplained fatigue
URGENT NOTE

Myth: Biopsies make cancer spread. Fact: Biopsies are safe, essential diagnostic tools that do not cause cancer to travel.
